I don't have any Linen to compare, but I had read about all sorts of different fabrics being used as strops, I had used a bag strap a few times, it was a fairly lightweight herringbone weave...

All I can tell you is that unicorns are real, beyond that I can't help. The whole idea was to make the strop as cheaply, quickly and easily as poss. Well under an hour including the hand sewing.

A biro, is just another name for cheap ballpoint pen. The barrel is the bit you hold.
