No, sanding got rid of the texture from blemishes and imperfections, ie it made the dressed side nice and flat.
Cupping tends to be worse on wider leather, as far as I can tell....

I made my strop from roo tail leather from the bay, it wasn't perfect but if I had cut a narrower strop from it it wouldn't have mattered. I got a 3x26" strip out of mine, with some odd leftovers...
