    I usually leave the lead wedge a fraction bigger and peen it to fit the scales tighter then sand the final shape to match the scale

    +1 on using masking tape first then the double...

    +1 on using masking tape first then the double sided tape
    Makes it a damn site easier to kleen them up
    I have used this on horn & bone with no problems
    Also on acrylic which saves getting it...

    I use acetone and it gets the double sided tape...

    Get it from Bunnings in 1L for about $10 think is was

    Any hard flat surface will work just need it...

    Any hard flat surface will work just need it water proof for wet sanding, I also use 320-400 grit for lapping, my glass plate is a piece of tempered glass from a set of old scales

    Dooey do you have a lapping plate you could use...

    Dooey do you have a lapping plate you could use wrapped in lower grit paper?
    I use wet & dry on my glass plate I use for lapping for thinning most scale materials.
    you could go as low as 80 grit...
