Ok you don't have to work your way up, just get one of the recommended razors and learn with it. There are plenty of videos to show you how to shave with a DE razor. Your preparation is important too...

I'd say listen to the advice already given get a decent razor like the EJ or Merkur by the time you've spent your money on cheap razors you may as well have gone for one of the ones...
