Ah, is that why it isn't recommended? I breadknifed my razors on the bottom of a pint glass.

I soak mine for the recommended five minutes. That seems to be enough. When I'm honing I dribble water on them with my hand every 20 laps or so.

I'll keep the breadknifing thing in mind in the future. I didn't realize it was not recommended. I wanted to start from scratch and set a bevel myself.

Newby question: From what I've seen most people when they're honing use a Norton 4000/8000 then finish on a 10k or 12k stone. I was wondering though would it work to go from a 6000 to a 10k or a 12k?...
