Yes, it it is related to and smells like sandalwood when I cut it on the table saw but not so much when sanding.

Another thing about padauk is how very light it is, so much so that it would lead you to believe it more fragile than it is.

I haven't found it fragile, but I'm only using it for razor scales not a hammer handle or something:p
