Not yet. Trying a longer soak in SG. Want to wait till the last minute to have the argument with wifey over boiling a DMT in the kitchen.:P

Would that damage the DMT? I'll give it a shot if the consesus/experience says it won't hurt. Thanks.

Soak in SG did not do the trick. Am trying the oven cleaner now. If that doesn't work, I'll try a longer soak, 24 hours or more, in Simple Green. I will post back to this thread if I find a solution.

Yeah, sounds like what I'm experiencing.
Does the gray intefere with the slurry process, blade edge, or cause problems with your waterstones?
Or do you just not use them for that when the issue...

Yes. The spot disappeared; thought I was good. Hard to believe 45 or 50 seconds on an oilstone can impart so much oil. I wonder if it is something else. Maybe I've damaged the coating?

WD40 did not work. It looked like it did, the spot disappeared. Then I ran it on top of a waterstone, got the blackish grey slurry, and the spot is now larger and uglier. Will try the other methods,...
