If you got them at SMKW they are not heat treated. I've done four of them and they are only drop forged to a rough shape. The scales are okay, but the wedge isn't that great and neither are the pins....

Do you have a picture of the NOS Herder blades? The ones I've seen and used were not heat treated, however that is fairly easy to do. It heat treats and grinds about like 1095. The bigger issues is...
