I can't argue with your experience. You learned very fast, so a smaller razor obviously worked well for you. I just wanted the OP to hear from someone who found bigger razors easier in the beginning....

I actually found bigger razors easier to shave with when I was a beginner. Plus they are easier to strop as the wider surface is more stable on the strop. 13/16 is a good size to start with IMO.
