What type of stone should I use to create slurry?

that could be.. Was thinking could have been a house number. It was being used as a stone as it was in a home made wood box. Also has a screw in it but not all the way through.

Picked up a new stone today and like some help with they type of stone. Looks like a slate type to me but not sure. Its very large at 19 inches long
