Quite honestly I am only speaking from what I have been told, not first hand experience.
Now that you mention it, that makes a lot of sense!!

As I understand it you can use either water or oil on any knife or razor hone, but once you start using oil there is no going back to water.
As for me, I use nothing but water on any of my stones!!

I use my "Super Punjab" barber hone to flatten my Escher. It creates quite a slurry and I am fairly certain that none of it comes from the barber hone!!
