While yes this would not have been my pick/choice I do not see a need to discount toally the OP's choice. In fact, her husband may be more than qualified to hone a "smiler" like this with no issues....

I think in time gold plating will eventually wear...
I think in time gold plating will eventually wear off a bit. That will be amplified if honed without tape if the gold is on the spine or one uses an mild abrasive polish a lot to get rid of...

Possibly but then again maybe not. The only way I can see that swoop style scales would be in stropping but then again, it is not so pronounced I believe it to be a issue.
