That works too , but then it takes some (usually not a whole lot of) hone wear to re-set the bevel to the correct angle with the spine laying on the hone. Same as using tape.

You can use tape on the spine until the chip and damage is removed and then re-set the bevel without tape using the permanent marker test to minimize the hone wear and allow for future touch ups...
