Just a follow up..

The Hess is back in shaving rotation. I reset the bevel and sharpened the old mule yesterday.

Not a bad shave.. Just a few nicks on the noggin.

I was feeling pretty proud...

Ok i misinterpreted that. I thought the steel wool process was an alternative process to sanding. I didn't pick up that you were telling me not to sand the blade.. my bad.

Would that remove the etching?

Ok. Those look really nice but i see what you mean about deep pitting. The pitting on these is minimal. Ill keep going lower on the grits until i start to remove it.

Ill have the Dremel soon enough and some paste. Sounds like a quicker method.

Is there any restrictions on how low of a grit you can use?

Yesterday I spent a few hours with the 1000 grit paper trying to remove the small black stains that remain where the rust was removed...

Yeah i realized yesterday afternoon i went backwards with the compounds (white, red, green).

Im going to go look for 2500 grit today and probably buy a dremel.

I couldn't find 2500 grit so i got 2000 and 1000. Did most of the work with the 2000. I also tried going over it with a few stages of buffing compound (white, red and green) by hand.. and i had...
