Okay time to let you guys know what I have found out.
First off the tumbler hasn't hurt any scales but you are right in the fact that the razor doesn't tumble or rotate properly with scales on so...

My replacement tumbler from Harbor Freight didn't even make it one day before breaking.
So I'd say stay way from them. They aren't worth the trouble and Midway's delivery time is superior.

I still haven't had a problem with the scales, granted the scales are on older straights and are original therefore they aren't the prettiest things around but still I haven't done any damage...

I think some of these older blades, particularly the old wedges, are not going to be completely stain free unless you do a regrind or something close such as a power sanding or grinding with a...

I'd strongly recommend buying from Midway rather than Harbor Freight. I have two from Harbor Freight and both had the trouble previously mentioned of the bowl turning. Well after tightening them down...

Glen you're right that the super fine white sand or silica works, also the fine glass beads also work.
Just don't try sand box sand. :cry:

Okay I found out a no-no, don't use sandbox sand. The first razor that I've destroyed an edge on and it was in some sandbox sand. I didn't think it was that much larger of a grit but after 14 hours...

Yep that's what I am saying Glen. Sorry I forgot to mention that I put the scaled one back in the media and in the most aggressive one at that and they survived fine. Just got dirty and a quick dip...

Glen, I think my experiment with an old horn scaled one proves that you can do it with the scales on. And I used them in the new plastic pyramid media which works better than any other by the way....

That's the one and it is listed at the store for $59.99 but you are right if your store carries it and you take in that picture in the link they will sell it at $39.99.

Yes black beauty is a blasting media but I am using a fine 20/40 mix, not the finest but next to it and it is not hurting the metal at all.

Well a fine silica sand does work but it doesn't flow as well as the walnut shells, due to it's weight I believe.
And so far I haven't noticed any difference between the two in cleaning ability....

I have a feeling it's not going to work as well with the scales on as it doesn't seem to rotate as freely as it would without them, but I will continue this through the night and see how it looks...

This is such an intriguing idea I went down to Guns Unlimited and bought one along with the mediums. And I have an older straight that the scales aren't all that great on so I'm trying it in there...
