Trizact belts last a long time, I've had more Trizact belts fail at the seam than wear out, that's both in my home shop and when I used to use them professionally sharpening dental instruments....

Sounds very similar to what I do except I don't tend to buff at the end although I might try on a test blade now you mention improved rust resistance; that's a neat tip.
