The jar is the only one I have used so I cannot compare the two. That one seems to work for me. The only reason that I ever tried it was because my wife had a jar that she considered to be too old...

I've only tried a couple of pre-shaves, but Noxzema seems to work just as well. If you happen to feel like trying a pre-shave, you might try dipping your toe in the water with this.
