This concept of torque always is hard to clarify. Don't think of it as an actual rotational torque. Instead, just focus on putting pressure on the edge and not on the spine.... -

Sorry, I guess I misinterpreted your original...
Sorry, I guess I misinterpreted your original post. I thought you only were adding tape as a correction after you were not satisfied with the edge after the original non-taped honing.

If you only are adding tape at the end, then you are creating a microbevel. You also are increasing the likelihood that the hone is cutting the very apex of the bevels.
