Could the water really be an issue? I have pretty nasty water in my building, but I have a filter for my aquarium. If I wanted to use that water, I'd have to heat it first, though. Thoughts?

Alum doesn't seem to make much difference to me...
Alum doesn't seem to make much difference to me either way. Now I just use it on cuts and nicks, which unfortunately still happen sometimes! : )

I use the Art of Shaving unscented pre-shave oil. I used to not use pre-shave oil, then added it to reduce irritation. I find it helps me. -
