Why not go for the 3k and find out ? IME it is well worth it but YMMV. :) Can't speak for the Shapton 16k. I have the 15k pro (not glass) and it is a great stone but I've not been using it lately.

I bought them all and looking at the Japanese grit chart I saw that the 3/5 seemed to be equivalent to a 4/8 American grit. So set bevels with the 1k and I like the Naniwa 1k better than any other 1k...
