The reason, I think, is as I said: The ura is not ground true- the few I have are all ground very nicely, but it is still a rough grind. A chisel, kogatana, plane(all single bevel instruments) backs...

I agree with that in theory. And only polishing the ura with a fine stone as you progress.

I have never needed to get coarser than 5000 and only look for the slightest hint of a bur which is like...
