That's good advice; two spine lengths. I'm now convinced I am using the wrong angle, and to much pressure because the burn only sets in after the shave and intensifies after applying the after shave....

Yes, I went against the grain. I think the fact I have sensitive skin and am not completely adapted to using the razor also has a lot to do with it.
