Yes, it is impressed in the leather, I wish there was some way to get the paint off of the scales with out destroying them

Well I just honed it and it took a GREAT edge with a Coticule!!!!

Mine could be a REALLY old rescale, the scales seem to be painted, they are rough and brown on the inside. Is there such a thing as hard pressed leather? My next oldest one has wood scales
