Do you put any shaving lather on the strop first before the 100 strokes or do you just use the lather when cleaning the strop.?

At Classic shaving I found these words "A canvas strop needs a daily hand finish to keep it in good condition." What has been your experience? Does anyone use a bar of soap to go over the linen...
