If you intend to soften & condition the strop, oil or grease the flesh side not the stropping side. As for alternatives lard works just fine. A 'little' is ok on the work side but buff it off well....

Well, yeah, the blades are pretty hard steel so normal use won't hurt them. Just be careful closing the razor so that you don't flex the scales. The edge will suffer damage even with a 'touch'...
