You go the right idea youjust need a better fitting tool. I used a small flat blade and studied the edge to see where a pin is located to get it loose. it will come apart I promise.

1) I do think it will extend the useful life of a DE blade. I also tried with used blades, a couple seemed much better, a couple seemed none...
