Today is the 70th Anniversary of the Allied Invasion of Fortress Europe on the beaches of Normandy, so today's shave is dedicated to my Dad, who fought in the hedgrows of Normandy, through the Hurtgen Forest, and on to the Ardennes, which the Allies thought a quiet front for these units to recover a bit, and lick their wounds before the final push into Germany. Just before Christmas, 1944, Dad found himself in the middle of the Ardennes Offensive. He was lucky enough to survive the War.
Some may notice the Keystone arm patch, signifying the 28th Infantry Division, known to the Germans as "The Bloody Bucket" because of it's shape. Dad's unit was the 28th Infantry Division, 110th Infantry Regiment, I Company, under the command of General Norman "Dutch" Cota.
How these men survived all that they faced, is beyond me ... Truly the "Finest Generation..."

    R.I.P. Dad ...

For those that would like to read more, the story is quite fascinating ... and bears remembrance.

Corporal Donald Matthews - 28th Division 110th Infantry Regiment

This last link honors a man that was a replacement in my Dad's Rifle Company. Still alive as of a few months ago, but well on in years ... May they all live on forever, and thanks for the indulgence ..
