JM Schmid & Son 6/8
Men-U Boar brush
TSD Irish Spring type
Pinaud Clubman
I think I'm finally figuring out the TSD soap because I got a great lather from it this morning! Now that I'm done testing the Gillette SP blades I can return to using whatever razor I feel like using every day. The JM Schmid did a fine job, and I really like the way it looks after shining it up some, and the Pinaud Clubman made for a fine finish to a very good shave!

Today's setup:
Dovo 6/8 Best Quality (15 webbing / 50 leather)
Badger brush
L'Occitane de Provence Cade shave soap
Thayer's
Aqua Velva Original Sport (green one)
Nivea Sensitive ASB
Bigelow Green cologne
I have to say, I am LOVING this.... the straight razor shave beats anything I ever got from a DE, with less irritation. Its still a slow(er) process for me, compared to a DE shave, but the results are worth it.
The Cade soap is, in my opinion, one of the best out there - excellent, slcik lather, and the scent is terrific.
Have a good day, gents.

Weds, Dec 13
Brush: Omega Boar
Soap/Creme: Cella
Razor:Gem 1912
Blade: Whatever it is that they Sell at Walgreens
Pre: hot towel
Post: alum plus witch hazel
Hair Groom: Jeris w/ oil
Result: It has been a while since I pulled out my SE razor, but I got one of the closest shaves I've ever had with it. The downside is that the combination of being a bit out of practice with it and my having had a rougher than usual shave yesterday meant that, while it was BBS, it also has left me a bit raw, hence the alum block and witch hazel, instead of my currently preferred lilac vegetal splashes. Still, it was amazingly close shave, and nothing is quite like the sound a 1912 makes when it mows down whiskers.

A close comfortable shave with a great soap, great razor and a great brush.
Jeltz, This is the first Gold Dollar I have ever seen!!!! I have heard that they are a mother to hone, and takes a real expert to be able to get an edge on them. Did you hone it yourself? Who honed it if not?
Just curious about them. I have a Giesen & Forsthoff, and I have never seen one of those in here either. I have had a very difficult time trying to get a bevel on it. Just wondering how, what, when, where??? etc.. hehehe.
Anyway, Great Shave!!

Golddollars are not to bad to bad to hone. Problem its a crap shoot if you get a good one or not. Iwas lucky toget a few good ones. Robert has G&F. If you having a prob setting a bevel.it could be the stone your using or just needs nore time.

Nice start of a mild, 5C / 41F, winter day. :)
Mike,
Gold dollars are prone to poor quality control, some have warped spines, most have badly ground shoulders which need grinding back so they can be laid properly on the hone, and some have badly made scales and the blade protrudes below them when closed. That said the shoulder issue on some can be worked around by angling the blade.
As I understand it the higher model numbers are better, this being a 208 IIRC. My experience of this razor is all I can talk about as I have not worked on any other gold dollars but it was easy to hone once I had used a dremel to grind down the shoulders. It holds a great edge so the steel is certainly good enough and it gives a shave which is on a par with many of my vintage razors, not the best but mid-range.
I do know that some people have reported the edge doesn't hold up well but that's not been my experience. I think that I originally honed this one on my Coticule using the dilucot method, and I recently gave it a few laps on a Chromium Oxide strop but its been shaving well for a while.
They are IMO a bit of fun and something for someone who had done a little restoration work previously. If you get a good one then, like me, you love it but if you bet a bad one then its a pain.

This was actually from last night...a first evening shave for me...
Prep: Hot shower and lather
Strop: SRD Red Latigo 3"
Razor: Dovo Pearlex 6/8
Soap: Classic Shaving Sandalwood
Brush: Simpson Beaufort 4
Post: Gillette Gel and Nuetrogena moisturizer
Notes: First shave on new acquired Dovo from SRD. It took out 2.5 days of growth without issue. It was nice to spend the time needed for the shave, while the Wife was keeping an eye on the dogs. Looking forward to the "tradition" of evening shaves to relax in the evening. I'm still getting the hang of shaving with a straight (seeing as this is my 4th or 5th shave), so not quite as smooth as I would prefer, but an improvement from the last nonetheless.

This razor is quickly turning into my favourite razor, i'm glad that i've given over so much time to this razor because it's worth the reward, when you feel really confident about using ths pretty scary sharp thing, well it no longer scares me, but it certainly delivers a super shave, maybe I will be getting the Feather AC- SS with the wooden scales in the new year?

Comments: Overall Shave was good. Razor still needs a bit of hone work on the toe and belly, but performed well reguardless. Chin is a little raw, but I am blaming that on operator error. No nicks or cuts, so not bad results for my third 3 pass with the straight. Thanks!
