Today's shave was proof positive that you do not have to spend a lot to get a FANTASTIC shave!!!
13/16" Clauss - Got in a trade for a barbers hone from Rene, I just ran it over the 8k, 12k and 300 laps on the strops.
24mm Silvertip - under 15$ from LarryAndro
VDH soap - a gift for under 5$ from my son for fathers day
Aqua Velva AS - a Walgreens buy, another gift for Fathers day from my youngest son. An oldie but goodie. Wife loves it.
British Sterling - part of a sampler set my wife picked up on the cheap at KMart.
All told this whole shave costs under 20$ and can be repeated dozens of times before any of the ingredients expire.
I have a whole new appreciation for VDH as I have figured out the formula that allows it to make some amazingly thick and smooth lather. A couple of shavings, very thin, of it in the bowl the night before with just a tiny amount of water. Whipped like crazy just before showering and by the time I'm clean and ready to go, it has thickened up and with just a little more whipping it is top notch!!!
Today it's over 100 degrees (in the shade) and you would think we live in Las Vegas or Phoenix not the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. I took a cool shower and shaved with cold water. It was refreshing and soothing. After giving the Clauss a touch up on the stones and stropping the heck out of it, it was a wonderful shave. I wish everyone could get and enjoy such a shave as this one was.
Enjoy your week gentlemen!!

Gave a minor change to the ritual, started off with an ATG thro'out, then followed by the other 'Gs'.After the Cade balm settled down, found out there is 1 lone grey guy way down the neck, called the O'Wing and popped him out.Followed Carl's advice,'map the face' and got a BBS today.
The morale is very very high today coz I managed to fire-up the Kawasaki Z1R last nite after months of trying to find out out what went wrong with the new wiring harness, just a matter of wrongly connected terminals at the coils.Yahooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo oooooo!
Have a great shave to all.

Nice shave this AM with the W&B. I love the smooooothness of this razor. As I shaved, I considered that I have an impending appointment at some time in the near future with my 14 year old son to teach him how to shave. He says he needs to, which he doesn’t, but I’m not going to tell him that. I’m a bit worried about the whole thing. Teaching my older (21 year old) son how to shave with a straight was fine, but Joel is a witty, sarcastic, opinionated arsehole, as many 14 year olds are; and he excels at it. It’s just possible that he has inherited the trait from me. Anyway, I decided the most important thing to pass on is lightness of touch. That and the angle. I could start off slow and teach him to use a DE, but he could do with some coolness points at school so a straight it is.

Hmmm, starting with an ATG. Might try that!
Is it just me or is that a REALLY cool photo? Seriously, that is a really cool photo...
Oh no. A German in the swimming pool. Scaring the children. Acrobatics. Interesting swimming costumes...
I think if I got lost and needed to come back here, I'd just like head for the centre of the universe (where Amerika is) and then head South from there...
Yeah, I think I'm from out of space AND time...
I don't mind 100, unless it goes on for too long. Wish it was 100 now... But I actually think the earth around me is dreaming of Spring a little; I've seen a few new shoots on the trees and the Jonquils are out...

Result: This was my second shave with this razor, and what a shave! I found this at an antique store for cheap. It wasn't pretty but I liked the scales, figured I would sharpen it up and see if it was worth any more effort. This razor honed up quicker than any other that I have, and it is SHARP! After the first shave, I unpinned it, polished the blade and scales, back to the hone for a touch up and shaved this morning. Smooooth 3 pass shave and I am off to work feeling like a king!
Have a Great Tuesday Gents!

Result: In my mind this razor is Gem's answer to the Gillette Tech. It's consistent, competent and comfortable but just not terribly aggressive, in fact at times almost anemic. Close enough for work though. My picture matches the weather hereabouts, I'm anxious for it to be over but we've got a few more days of it to sit through yet.

Carl, if I were in your place I show him how to do it, but I don't forcing. Would let do it, and if he don't succeed, I would help and show him again. Then, I think, he will respectfully listening to you. Although I would add, my son eight years later will be 14 years old ...

Gentlemen, today's shave was a lesson in honing: that how a straight razor can be so magical when honed by a master. Today's razor used was Paris, a 6/8 round point near wedge restored and honed by the great Sham. Several times throughout the shave I had to stop and examine the blade: was it just me or was this razor celestial? It was the razor, I admit. Honed perfectly. So, Sham, my dear friend, you are the master, indeed, and I thank you.
Well, anyway, here is today's shave den playbill:
Razor: Paris, a 6/8 near wedge French round point
Brush: Vulfix super badger
Cream: Body Shop Macca Root
Pre-shave: Edwin Jagger
Face lather
Scuttle: Moss
Alum
Witch hazel
Balm: Institute Karite
Aftershave: Old Spice — I remember it as a far more robust fragrance than this new anemic version
Max,
They MW soap is still somewhat of an enigma to me. I think you would love the scent. The maker describes it as "dark iron-distilled East Indian patchouli, Virginia cedarwood, cinnamon leaf, oak moss, lime and petigrain essential oils, it's a dark smoky blend." I think she is spot on. Where I think you would be disappointed with the soap is in how really finicky it tends to be. I've had a terrible time figuring out the lather, and had almost written it off. Today was going to be my last attempt; of course, I managed to get a very nice lather now! It is incredibly slick and very protective (although I need to work a little more to get the cushion I suspect one can get with it). The reason I say it is an enigma is that even when the lather is substandard (e.g., thin and breaks down immediately), I've gotten really good shaves. The best property of this soap is that it is remarkably good at moisturizing. I've never had any soap (including MdC, MWF, Bomb, XPec, or Mike's) that leaves my face feeling as amazing afterwards. Bottom line, if you want to take the time to really figure out a soap, I highly recommend MW. But, based on what I know of you, and your very accurate belief that there are too many products out there that just work really well without extra manipulation, I do not think you would be happy with it.
Nice, !!!!!!
After your "Amerika" wise crack I was tempted to take this statement a bit further. However, since I admire your sense of humor and your writings, I decided to leave to your imagination what I would have written.
Enjoy the day.

Ahhhhh....feels good to have a straight shave after a long day at work. I am still fighting the edge on this razor a bit, as it is feeling slightly harsh. I suspect the extra-hard TI steel might need some tweaking to play nicely with my face. Have a great evening, SOTD brothers!

I unfortunately spilt a little coffee on my laptop keyboard about two week ago. As a result my SOTDs have a lot less text as I have to use the virtual keyboard to type some of the letters, in addition to the space button! I'll just let the picture do the talkin'!

Results: The shave with this razor on Saturday was (to be polite about it) uninspired. This started out to be a proper haircut and test drive for the razor. The edge on this thing was absolutely insane! One pass on the dome was near BBS. I did a second one just because I was having such a good time and the edge on the razor was so remarkably crisp. I then decided to do a couple passes on my face as this morning's shave was none too agressive. Not only was the touch up on the razor a resounding success this was a nice relaxing and very fun evening shave. I may try night shaving for a spell but for now, I'm hunkered down with a cold PBR. Cheers Fellas!
Ha! Yeah, I know, I was a bit TOO witty. I got the 'Amerika' term from both Franz Kafka and also a Rammstein song. I mean no dis-respect to you or any of my friends here. I was feeling a bit 'disruptive' yesterday, I had a shot at quite a few establishments in other threads (including 'my own') :-)
Haven't posted here in a while, but I tried a new thing (for me)
