Today was pretty hot and humid. It felt like an oven outside. After cleaning out my shave den I noticed the GFT Rose hidden behind some other goodies. Couldn't resist for today's shave and whipped up a bowl of pink lather with my C2 brush. Did my usual 3 passes with a freshly honed TI and ended up with super slick BBS face. A splash of Alt Innsbruck and a splash of Acca Kappa's Cedro. Wonderful.

Back to watching the Olympics which has been showing day in, day out around the house. The "Dream Time" avoided a big upset this morning against Lithuania. LeBron James is my hero for today. As is Michael Phelps with his 22nd medal (18 Gold). Oh and a big hooray for Misty May, Kerri Walsh, Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal

Quite a stupendous day. Today, I went for a walk to the forest surrounding the town cemetery, just up the road in the little town in which I live. I go there often; it’s a forest mainly of pine, with some stringy bark too. At least one fox lives there; and other animals. I’ve walked there with the dog for about 15 years, ever since I moved here. Years ago I’d run along the path, timing myself. After than my oldest son also ran the path. Then it happened that he ran the path and I walked the path.

I wrote a poem, about the path, soon after my grandson, Bailey was born, about four years ago. The poem is below. Some of you may know of Bailey and his fight. Today, Bailey walked that forest path with me, something I was in doubt that he’d ever do a few months ago. I think it was a stupendous day.

So, to the shave, the shave was in my room. I bought a little table and one of those old Meakin bowl and jug set things yesterday. The set came with a soap bowl. I borrowed the bathroom mirror (I’ll get an extendible mirror later). The room’s a bit dark, with no main overhead light, just little table lamps; and it was a dull day so I needed candlelight. I filled ¼ the jug with hot water from the kitchen. I stropped in the bathroom where I normally shaved, so my whole routine was changed. Normally I shower, lather, strop, shave at the bathroom sink in the morning. I used no prep but splashing a small amount of warm water on my face. The soap dish was too large for the soap, I’ll buy two of these, mill them, and press them into a block about the size of the dish; I think. There wasn’t really enough light, and that, combined with the whole change of routine, place, etc, made the shave feel very, very fulfilling and basic. I loved it. Best shave in a very long time.

I’ll buy a shelf to place above the table (which isn’t really large enough in hindsight) get a couple of brass candlesticks, a ring in the wall for the strop, an extendible mirror, a place to hang a small towel, and I’m set. I love this idea, I’m definitely shaving like this each Sunday from now on, and will try to transition to more often and then shaving like this always…


My Path

Soon, when he’s old enough, I’ll show it to my Grandson
He’ll tread the path too.
And keep the weeds and grass down.
It’ll then be his path.
His Grandfather made it.

Interesting shave today...LAZY day today so I didn't shave until 4 pm. Stropped up my TI (my first straight. I purchased it from TAOS before I new too much about straights. I never had it honed and it always "pulled" when I used it so it's never been my "favorite" blade. I purchased a balsa strop loaded with Chrom Ox and a felt strop with diamond paste. I stropped it and it made a HUGE difference!). I purchased a puck of Williams a few months back when out of town, used it once and HATED it. When I got home, I put it in a small bowel with and put what was left of some Jack Black cream (never one of my favorites either) I had after cleaning out the container. I stuck it in a drawer and basically forgot about it. I decided to give it a second chance today, and WOW, it whipped up a huge scuttle of lather. I planned a one pass shave, instead, went two passes -- WTG & ATG = practically BBS. I knew the razor was great, but it's really a joy to use now that it's been properly stropped/refreshed, but the Williams/Jack Black was a great surprise! I might add some Proraso Cream next time.
