Almost like a SR longevity for me
7 to 8 shaves with the Feather Pro series. The Mongoose has caused my straights to gather dust. The shaves are better than I have gotten with any of my DE's and equal my best straight razors.
Unless you find a private seller you will be on a lengthy waiting list. You may see one on the bay but more than likely overpriced.
yea it's a fine shaver alright.
It doesn't equal my straights but comes very close. The R41 will equal a straight for me.
I'm getting around 5-6 shaves with it using Feather pros.
Can't really add much to what the others have said.
They are one fine razor!
They shave fantastic.
Best place to buy.........direct from Mongoose on Facebook!
Me too. I think the rigidity of the blades and the precision clamping system hold the blade absolutely stiff. I see no downsides. It is almost as close as a good SR shave and blades last a long time. I'm using the Feather Super Pros. I ordered from them online. Great service and not much of a wait.
My results mirror those posted. I might add, that like the 2011 Muhle R-41, you have to be careful or the Mongoose will bite. I'm using the Feather Pros and I don't know how many shaves, but a lot out of one blade. I intend to try the Feather ProGuard blades. I hear that they are a bit more 'mellow' and forgiving.
As far as buying a Mongoose, if you do buy one, and you don't like it, I imagine you'd get your money out of it with no problem.
For me, awesome, has the heft of a good Sheffield chopper, and the strength of the way that SE is held makes for a rock solid shave.
The fact that the blade is longer, and there is a plethora of different blade choices make it an excellent DE. Have a couple of days growth, pop in a Feather Pro, for me, if it's normal Feather ProGuard, and if I just need a touch up shave, Kaptain Titan Mild...ton's of choice.
Yes, and it will bite, JimmyHAD mentioned he'd been bit on the neck, not two day's later, that critter bit me in the exact same place...blow will flow in this dangerous game we play! :gl:
Feather super pro for me. I get 4 solid shaves and can do a 5 but get a little pulling on my tender spots. Getting a super close shave is easy but I have had a little problem with getting some razor burn no matter what I do but I chalk it up to inexperience. I use it maybe once a week at the moment. I got mine from mongoose and waited maybe 6 weeks.
I got the Alumigoose a few weeks ago, not used the ss version. Iv ony been using the Feather Super blades (these are the thickest) so far and its giving me much closer shaves than my other high end DEs, with less passes too! Its also very comfortable i find. I think the next batch of Alumigoose will be ready fairly soon, according to the facebook profile.
Gentlemen,
I can't make up my mind about the Mongoose, even though it is a great razor and quite similar to the straight. Some days I feel too much blade on my face and some not. Either way, the shave is always topnotch. I think I'm still trying to find the razor's sweet spot. The Feather Professional are my blades of choice. The Alumigoose turned out to be too light for me.
I've purchased two, and ended up selling each of them. It's a very well made razor, and can give a close shave with the Feather Pro blades, but I found that there was too much drag. I prefer the head style of the Cobra or King Cobra, which are hard to come by, as they are easier to maneuver around the face and have less drag, while using the same blade.
Yes we've discussed the drag issue. I suspect because of the design and heft the razor really hugs the face. You just need to ensure you keep lather on your face to eliminate that issue.
I replaced the handle on mine with one of those titanium jobs. It's a bit shorter and lighter than the original and changes the entire feel of the blade for the better.
I think you will be really pleased with it Jimmy. The change in the shave isn't minor. It's feels like a totally different razor.
Gentlemen,
I use my Mongoose with different handles: Dr. Bomber, Weber bulldog and Maggard MR5. Of course, each feels differently in the hand. I found the Jurgen Hempel handles too heavy, so I sold them. The best and the most comfortable handle I found for the Mongoose was the Above the Tie Kronos, which I no longer have. Sometimes my logic limps along like a peg legged pirate.
Obie you need to get yourself one of Jurgen's titanium handles then. His wave style handles in titanium are so good. This is the one i use with my mongoose.

Alex,
Are they as heavy than the stainless steel Hempels?
He mostly uses titanium these days.
Here is a quick picture i took of my Alumigoose and Hempel titanium handle

Alex, my friend,
Thank you for the information. I certainly will consider the titanium handle.
I would recommend getting one. Excellent shave. But I agree, the Super Pros will bite.
No problem Obie. I cant believe how good these handles feel. I now have 4 Hempel titanium handles and have no desire to go back to heavier ss handles for any of my DEs. They seem to balance razors better and feel more agile.
Plus Hempel is great to deal with (via facebook) and makes you feel welcome.
I agree mine was shipped the same day I payed for it and it arrived within 3 days. Super fast service for me.
Looks like they are no longer making polished heads for the razor and also are starting to sell through vendors so prices will be going up. Now is the time to get one of those, it will resell easy if it does not perform well for the owner. .
Gentlemen,
Anyone have a link to Jurgen Hempel?
Thanks.
Bullgoose has the hex handle which is the one I have.
Yes that one great on bullgoose, plus it will help if you are in America. Other than that you will have to add him on facebook and then message him on there.
I shaved with the MG again today. Feather pro and this was the 6th shave with the blade. Three days growth. The last shave I peeled a layer or two, or three, of skin off of the front and side of my neck. Not bad but who wants that.
Today I lathered up well with an old Rooney FInest prototype and QED Lavander. I wasn't sure if the peeling skin on the previous shave was due to the blade or the operator, so I took extra care.
I found that focusing on a light touch gave a great smooth and bbs shave with absolutely no irritation, residual stubble, or weepers. The MG with a heavy handle requires concentration .......... at least with me it does. Worth the effort for the result. :)
Gentlemen,
Those of you considering the Mongoose, it will no longer be available through the Facebook order system, according to the folks at Mongoose. Now Mongoose razors are available from the vendor Maggard.
