Thread: Cleaning a Gillette Fatboy

Good morning all, just a question about the best way to clean a "Fatboy". Bit of a broad question, but could you please help? Thanks in advance.

You could try using a soft toothbrush and some tooth paste to get rid of the soap scum build up.

i used steradent it is for cleaning dentures

I normally use a citrus cleaner (as above) (cheap)
Then i use a white or cider vinegar soak to loosen the crud.
Then while wet from the soak, I run the razor through all its mechanical paces. That way, I am better assured that the crud is gone and will not be holding stuff I do not want near my face.
Then rinse well under running warm water while running the razor through its paces a few times to get the acidic vinegar out.
An ultrasonic cleaner works well, but costs a lot and you just speed up the processes above.

You can youtube search and find vids on how to take them apart. I did this myself. Wasnt to bad. The trick is getting back together at the right setting. So that 9 is 9 and 1 is 1. Took my a few trys before i got that correctly done.

Are you referring to an ultrasonic cleaner used for cleaning pistols? I was wondering about this since I recently (yesterday) purchased another Gillette Slim. I have not received it yet but as always, I’m concerned about cleaning/sterilization before use.

When my coffee pots get a layer of coffee scum stuck to the insides, which I hate to the point I'm obsessed with keeping them clean, I actually use a Polident denture cleaner in it overnight. I usually have to scrub the inside with a dish brush to loosen it, and then add up to 3 tablets to finally get it clean, and I'm pretty good about keeping the pots clean and stored.

Using a Polident on an old DE makes perfect sense, and I can see it superbly cleaning it as well...I have two FatBoys I cleaned using toothbrush and toothpaste, they cleaned up, but going to throw them both in a small bowl of water now with a Polident tab, if it works the same way as it did on the Stainless Steel coffee pots, they'll come out gleaming....

On the other hand, I'll try one first....just to make sure it doesn't dissolve or anything.....

Similarly to advises given above, I start with mild dish soap then I use vinegar. On the old razors which I inherited, I let them soak in vinegar/water solution for a bit.
Used a toothbrush, toothpicks cotton swabs to remove old soap buildup.
Lots of patience and elbow grease get the job done!
