Great shaves yesterday and today with my Muhle R41, a Feather blade and Pre de Provence No.63 shave soap and aftershave balm! I love the razor and the scent, and the soap lathers pretty well too!
More important, my wife loves the scent!

I really like the 63 as well. Have you tried the cream? Wow!! What a weird experience. It’s a non lathering cream that leaves your face feeling dry. Not as in cracked/no rain dry - but like not wet dry, but still a lovely kind of soft. I personally love the stuff, but it is not like anything I’ve ever used before. I leave it in the shower for those, “panic” shaves.
As for the 41, I love that thing too. I feed it Personna Reds. The Feathers were just a bit too keen in mine. Particularly on that first shave. You really do have an iron disposition don’t you lol.
It’s a great head and the only DE I use anymore.
I would like one, I think. I have several DE's and all seem mild to me.
Shaving with a straight mostly, I am used to backing-off and changing angles.
An aggressive one with the Personnas sounds good.
If I use the feathers in a less aggressive one, it is hard to judge where that 'point' is until I am past it!
I still don't use them enough to justify buying a 41, though.

Well, I have never had a Fatboy, but it seems experienced shavers dial them 3/4 aggressive and stay there with Feathers. Why? Why don't they dial it up anymore?
Why not use a less aggressive blade and dial it up?
I am asking because I don't know, mind you!
Seems like the 41 is a 'just do it' thing?
Find YOUR blade and learn it?
Is this Muhle more aggressive than a Slim at 9? Not familiar with them at so I have no frame of reference. Nice looking razor.
They are supposed to be too much for most, I think.

I honestly don’t know how that rumor got started. Mybe the first head was way more “aggressive?” I don’t know. Maybe it was people who always used Feathers and were determined to continue doing so even if it didn’t work in the 41.Quote:

I’m nit picking, I know, but I’ve had some seriously rough or aggressive shaves with “mild” DEs and new blades that just didn’t work for me. It felt as though it was ripping my face apart lol.

I'd say the bad rep tagged to aggressive DEs stems from tyros to wet shaving trying to prove their manhood by using an aggressive DE way before they should. Even slants got a bad rep if you believed them. If you can shave well with a straight razor and you pay the same respect to an aggressive DE you should get on fine after a slight learning curve.

I don't know. I've used plenty of DEs including the aggressive kind but the R41 is in a class by itself. The first time I used mine (with a feather blade) I did a number on my skin worse than the first time I used a straight.
Yea if you go really slow and really with a light touch you are ok but with the time it takes I may just as well use a straight.
There are other DEs that (these days) shave about as good as the R41 without it's orneriness.
Sounds like perhaps I should stick to my mild ones with Feathers...........
I found the 41 a bit more than the 9 setting on a slim. I had the 2011 model and never had an issue with it. Althought lots of folks said it was a blood thirsty razor. :shrug:
Sold it. I should have kept it but i didnt. I was like Tom when it came to the feather blades. Dial the razor down a bit with the agressive blades but found more comfort in running my slim at 9 with silver, blue blades.
This DE really is polarizing I find. All I know is, I’m slowly giving all my other DEs to friends because I find this one so efficient/comfortable.Quote:

Without any doubt - totally Harold’s fault.
I stumbled into the DE forum a few years ago after using a straight or 2 blade cartridge for years & years. I cut myself to ribbons 50+ years ago when I first tried a DE but decided to try it again. I've tried 5 or 6 DE's now and I find the Merkur slant or the R41 to be the way to go. Someone in the forum suggested using the razor to lightly wipe off the lather: NO PRESSURE. Hate to be a heretic, but I think the shaves are better than the shaves I get with my straights.
