    Default Travel Razor

Given the option I’d use a straight razor but this isn’t always possible when traveling. Have any of you had any luck using one of the very inexpensive Bic single blade safety razors? The reason I ask is because it seems like this would be the closest type of razor to a DE that an airline would allow on to carry on a plane. Along those lines, have any of you 'carried on' your DE's? If you've had any experience with these single blade Bics, how do they compare with DE's or more modern multi blade razors?

    Thanks!

Razor blades cannot be carried on. I have tried that five times, and failed. For extended stays, I now forward a blade to the hotel.

For overnight stays, I now take a Gillette Mach 2 with me. If the US Bics are anything like the ones they sell in Europe, I would not touch them with a barge pole. The Mach 2 is about as expensive, but the shave is a lot smoother.

As an aside, I was mildly surprised when I unpacked my carry on luggage after a trip to Spain. I had unwittingly taken a 6/8ths razor on board. Tells you about about the different concepts of security in different parts of the world.

You could always scout ahead and see if local drugstores sell DE blades where you're going. Alternately, you could mail a straight ahead of you. Or, as a cheaper alternative, you should be able to mail a few DE blades in a normal envelope without needing extra postage. I'm still trying to figure out what I'm going to do for my little Thanksgiving vacation...

Also, if you have any, I've had success in lathering Proraso on my face with just my fingers (no need for a brush/mug). Better than using normal soap or carrying extra gear, imo.

I'm thinking about a little trip in February. I'm visiting a friend. I guess that, at the time, I'll mail him a couple of DE blades that fit in a Shavette... The fact that I will not need a strop will make me some room and ease out the thing, I guess.
If I cannot mail him the blades... I'll just trust myself to find DE blades over at my destination. However, if I do not find DE blades... I'll have to make do with a disposable.

Concerning the BIC - I've used those quite a bit before I tried DEs. They are like any other disposables... bad! But I guess one has to shave. I agree with BeBerlin... if you have to choose a disposable, chose the Mach2 or some of the Wilkinson disposables. The 2 bladed BIC might be a better choice, I guess... I've used that with good results before I had the wet shaving epiphany!

I just bring a DE and pack the blades in the bag I'm checking - they're pretty good at spotting razor blades in carryons!

What would happen if a DE or SE razor blade gets found in your carry-on?
Do they just take it or do they take you to a room or something?

    Cheers

I bought a vintage schick injector for this purpose. I haven't tried to carry it on yet, but I'm hoping they won't realize what the blade cartridge contains.

Try the avid. Its basically a Merkur twin blade. Sharp, comfortable and great for travel.

I've found the Bic "Metal" to be a very good travel razor. It is a single blade with a metal safety bar so it feels about the same. It is a plastic razor, so it is light weight, but gives a pretty good shave.
