Thread: Gillette, but what kind?

I have had this for a long time. I just took a tooth pick and an old toothbrush to it and cleaned it up. I thought it was corroded all over, but I believe it was just old soap/cream. I took a wire brush (carefully) to the handle and there was a cloud of soap scum that came off it. This thing was dirty!

That is a Superspeed. It is often reffered to as a "flare tip" because of how the TTO (Twist To Open) knob sort of bells or Flares" out. If I looked at the picture right I belive the date code is "I 3" a letter on the right side and a number on the left. That would mean it was made in the third quarter of 1963.

that looks like it would be a nice shaver. pretty clean and no brassing. do you use it?

Ken is correct....I have one from the early 50's that I use for small touch-ups or when I travel. The old Gillettes have a lot of class!

I believe the soap scum has preserved it for this long. I used to shave with it a good bit. I went at it like it was a disposable though with little prep. Not the best way. I would rip across my face this way and that and get an "ok" shave. I really didn't know there was a technique to it like straight shaving.

Definately a technique. If you're interested in learning it, go to youtube and search for "mantic59". His channel is called "shave tutor" and its all about the world of wetshaving. He uses a DE, so there's plenty of info about technique, blades, razors, lather, brushes, websites, forums, and all sorts of goodies. Also, he's funny in his videos, so they're fun to watch.

I have an old Superspeed I use now and then and it's a great shaver. Can't go wrong with the right blade.
