Thread: Do you use right and left hand to hold DE razor

Ok just have to ask a question. With my straight I use both hand to shave. My right hand for the right side of my face, and my left hand for the left side. The exception is ATG on the neck, I use the opposite hand.

Do most people use 2 hand with their DE?

I use both hands when I shave with a DE. Definitely. Right side, right hand; left side, left hand.

I use both hands as well......

Didn't use to, but after learning both hands with the straight razor, it was a natural.

Right hand only. I fooled with both with a straight but have gotten so used to shaving with the right that I am just sticking with it one way or the other. No more DE for me in years but if I were to pick one up again it would be dominant hand.

Every now and then, when I am traveling, I really like my little Schick Injector with the bakelite handle. Not sure if that qualifies as a DE, but it is a fun razor that does a respectable shave.

Never tried using my left hand with a DE. When I was using cartridges I only used my right so when I transitioned ot DE's I never thought to use my left. Even now that I'm starting to use straigts as well, and I use both with that, when I pick up a DE it's right hand only. The reason being I think it's a lot easier to manipulate a DE with one hand to cover all areas then it is with a straight.

Yeah, the injector does qualify as something similar to a DE. It's a single edge instead of double, but the idea's the same thing. Also, there is some technique to be learned, but not as much as a DE requires. The injectors shave a bit different because the blade's much thicker than a DE blade. It's not an unpleasant feeling......just different because the blade's stiffer.

I'm very familiar with the injector you have. I went through an injector period years ago and used almost all of em. Lots of different blades too, since not all injector blades were good ones for me. Yep, the same thing as using a DE and needing the right blade.

Lots of members love that type you use, but personally it didn't fit me very well. Of course Lynn, that means nothing when it comes to your own face. It may be the injector for you or it may not.....heh.

I have something you might find amusing if you'd like to sample a different type injector. This would be a Schick adjustable one, and yes, the settings do work like a DE........very effective. I also have some nice blades. Let me know if that interests you, and no problem if you'd rather skip it.

I'll just mention that one of the better in production blade is the Schick Chinese version. Comes in a pack of 7 usually. There's also a German version, but they aren't as good. they can be found in drugstores and smaller stores rather than places like Target.

I've gotta say this is a perfect example of how SRP differs from the other shaving forums. Looks like well over half the members use both hands for DE shaving. Man, it made me smile reading that.

From what I can see, you straight guys have to do some unusual stuff for a great shave. Shaving with both hands and stretching the skin for example. Yeah, you gentlemen paid your dues to learn that skill.

I believe the vast majority of non straight using DE shavers never switch hands during the shave. It's certainly the exception to the rule, in any case. Here it's the norm..........pretty interesting.

The reason most DE users don't stretch their skin or change hands is there's simply no need to. Using technique like bullfrogging on the neck does the trick nicely. There's other gyrations to do that helps flatten out other places.

There's no need to use the off hand to get a great DE shave. Man, that would be a real pain to learn.......whew. The DE can whack whiskers anywhere on your face and neck, and using only one hand.

I am far too left-handed to try and use a sharp blade on my face with my right hand. Dominant hand only. I tried using my right hand a couple times with disastrous results.
