Any DE blades would work, although I have heard the Merkur blades can be a bit harsh.

Ah okay, can you recommend a pack of DE blades? Preferably one that can be purchased from SRD.

Well, if you've ruled out Merkur blades (they're not horrible, mediocre perhaps) that only leaves 1 brand that SRD carries: Derby. You could do worse than them; very smooth, very forgiving.

I'd say give them a shot before moving on to the sharper blades.

I like derby blades they always give me a good shave. You can also try a sample pack to find out which blades will work for you.

    bknesal,

+1 on the recommendation of getting a blade sampler pack, and one of the bigger ones at that.

Blades are definitely a very personal and a YMMV thing; some of the blades I have found to be really terrible for me (e.g. Treet Blue Special) have users that swear they are the best blades in the world !

    Good Luck

    Have fun !

    Best regards

    Russ

Sample packs are the way to go, more chance of finding a blade to suit you.

    Hi Brent,

Yep, a blade sampler's the best idea. No need for one with 15-20 different blades, but you do want 4-5 of the more popular brands included. Something with Crystals and/or Red Personnas, maybe the Derby, some Super Iridiums and maybe a Feather for down the road.

Far as the Merkur blade goes, that's the one I started with myself years ago. Nasty little blade for me, but I had no way of knowing that. Some people like those but most don't. They're best tried after using other blades, so you can compare em properly.

I'd suggest using the same type blade for two weeks straight and then switch to another. You'll have to try a bunch to figure out the best ones, but won't have to use one for nearly as long as the first ever blade.

I have some Iridiums you're welcome to try. They're very sharp but you still have plenty of room for error with these. Let me know if that interests you.

Okay I think I'll go with the sampler pack. One last question, about how long does the average DE blade last? I know this will vary with different brands, faces, etc., but a rough range would be helpful. Thanks!

    Brent
