You'll find out why my parents/grandparents were called 'the greatest generation'...... LOL. I started shaving right before the Platinum Plus and Super Stainless were first introduced and that was one of the best things that happened in my life at the time. Those blue blades gave me the blues. Good luck with them and let us know how you like 'em.
well, just finished shaving with one.. and i have got to say it was not as bad as some of the more experienced shavers say they were.. i must admit that it was a bit rough in the beginning with my 3 days of growth but after the 2nd and 3rd pass it felt smooth. needless to say i have not shaved with a feather blade or any of the sort. my normal blade is a Dorco 301 that my barber gave me a pack of 100 last year.. i can say that these old blues are better than them.
Any DE blade is better than the Dorcos:) JMO
Pick up some feathers and try them :)
I'd be nervous about using 50 year old blades as you don't know what could build up on the edges over time..... :(
Probably the biggest issue with using old blades like that is whether the edge has deteriorated through damage or corrosion. Actually quality wise the old DE blades were far better than the current ones. it's only because of the coatings that make the new ones perform the way they do. I dare say you could hone up the old DE's to shave every bit as good as the new ones.
The old carbon "blue" blades are an acquired taste, like Scotch. You will need to adjust your blade angle and how you stretch your skin. The edges don't deteriorate with age (unless stored in a wet or humid environment), BUT the hone angle is different from current stainless steel blades.
Good Luck!
Don't beat yourself up,in a few days you will have some real DE blades:)
The old gillette blues are my wife's favorite blades. We haven't found a new blade that even comes close in her opinion.
Wow! After I read this thread earlier I went and tried shaving with my Gilllette 1959n Fatboy safety razor,Been shaving so long with a str8,I forgot how to use a safety razor
yea as of now I only have a super speed (1961) but i just did a trade with another member and should be getting a Feather AS-D1 in the mail soon! i cant wait!! Another generous member is sending me a pack of some blades to try out as well. i currently have 14 straight razors, but hopefully i will get some more DEs.. i might join the dark side and get a fat boy next!!
First, Is shaving with DE razor the dark side? lol. I made the switch from DE razors to straights last week. From what I have read, the angles at which one should hold a straight differs according to the direction of the shave (i.e. WTG, XTG and ATG). The right angle for each DE razor is slightly different and it takes a little time to get used to them. When you try an adjustable razor, the angle will also be slightly different (I found a slight different in the angle depending on the setting of the adjustable razor). Once you are used to adjusting to the correct angle of the DE automatically, you will not have any problems trying a different razor.
My first DE shaves were with some blue "Bill's Blades" I didn't rip any skin off and they did ok. I have been using the Red Personnas since then and love them. Of course I will always prefer straight shaving.
I have to second the "anything is better than a Dorco" sentiment. I've used an old gillette blade and it was fine, certainly better than a Dorco. :>
