Thread: Im going to shave with some old Gillette Blue blades from the 50s..

been wanting to see how it would feel..Wish me luck!! lol

You'll find out why my parents/grandparents were called 'the greatest generation'...... LOL. I started shaving right before the Platinum Plus and Super Stainless were first introduced and that was one of the best things that happened in my life at the time. Those blue blades gave me the blues. Good luck with them and let us know how you like 'em.

well, just finished shaving with one.. and i have got to say it was not as bad as some of the more experienced shavers say they were.. i must admit that it was a bit rough in the beginning with my 3 days of growth but after the 2nd and 3rd pass it felt smooth. needless to say i have not shaved with a feather blade or any of the sort. my normal blade is a Dorco 301 that my barber gave me a pack of 100 last year.. i can say that these old blues are better than them.

Any DE blade is better than the Dorcos JMO

My super speed is my only DE im a traight razor guy, i had a NICE President but i never got to shave with it and sold it.. lol i have 3 more unopened blue blades.. hell im going to use them! lol

I'd be nervous about using 50 year old blades as you don't know what could build up on the edges over time.....

i checked the bevel with my dads loop.. it looked ok =]

Probably the biggest issue with using old blades like that is whether the edge has deteriorated through damage or corrosion. Actually quality wise the old DE blades were far better than the current ones. it's only because of the coatings that make the new ones perform the way they do. I dare say you could hone up the old DE's to shave every bit as good as the new ones.

The old carbon "blue" blades are an acquired taste, like Scotch. You will need to adjust your blade angle and how you stretch your skin. The edges don't deteriorate with age (unless stored in a wet or humid environment), BUT the hone angle is different from current stainless steel blades.
