hi , what is everyones favorite safety razor?
My favorite safety razor is the Gem 1912 SE. Just about as close as you can get to shaving with a straight IMO.
My 1949 Gillette SuperSpeed is at the top of my DE list.
My 1958 fatboy is a great lil shaver

Before I switched to a str8 my favorite DE was a 1930's Gillette New Open Comb.
Fat boys are the gold standard for DEs
Favorite would have to be my Gillette model '04 J. WW1 razor, beautiful condition. Very nice , clean shave in 2 passes.
My 1974 Gillette Super Adjustable!
i like most vintage american gilettes think fat boys are up there with the best, what american vintage razors should i look out for ? i live in uk thanks
Gentlemen,
Make mine the 1948 Gillette Aristocrat.
My favorite DE for shaving is a Red Tip Superspeed.
1959 Fatboy. I have a few Superspeed razors that are very nice also.
SE wise, I do like my 1912. DE wise, I mostly use my Old Style ( I might like a new more, haven't tried one yet...), and for a BBS finish I'll stick a feather in my 40s superspeed for the last pass or 2. Adjustables are great, too. Really a lot of vintage razors are excellent, and, except for a few models, are very reasonably priced.
Gem Micromatic. The 1912 is second but it tends to make my neck a little raw. The Micromatic is just smooth and easy.
1970 Gillette Super Adjustable long handle. It's what I originally learned to shave with, found on a few months back when I decided to try wet shaving again. But to tell the truth, I like my Feather AS D1 best.
I'm still partial to my Gillette Fat Boy, but I'm a sucker for heavy razors....:)
My Gillette Fat Handle Tech!

Of vintage DEs the Barbasol and Gillette Big Fellow are right up there neck and neck (no pun intended) as favs. My all time favorite is the slant. Various iterations throughout the years culminating in the Merkur, which is the best version IMHO.
I have about seven Gillette's of varying ages, all great shavers, but the bid surprise is a Schick injector, that shaves almost as good as a straight, completely surprised by that. And another surprise was they all are better than the Merkur adjustable
I love those Valet Autostrops. I guess I just like them because of all the moving parts. Never did shave with one though. And I know nothing of how many different models there were.
That's an easy question. I agree with my friend Obie:
The Gillette Aristocrat.
Her is mine.

I love the merkur heavy duty stub handle. perfect for when I can't concentrate to shave with a straight.
For SE, it's my 1912 GEM and Ever Ready with my 1914 "Little Lather Catcher" running a close second. I still take an occasional day off from straight shaving to use 'em just for the fun of it. The 1912's are my go-to travel razors. Easy to deal with on the road and a nice close three pass.
Agree with the Aristocrat: While the late '40's style super speed is a great razor, the little added heft/distribution/balance of the Aristocrat makes it a fabulous shaver. IMHO, my '46-47 Aristocrat is my favorite and my 1912 Gem Jr. with the strange handle (c.'40's?) is a close second

The best shave I've gotten from a safety razor has been with a Gem Featherweight. Comfortable, and smooth as a baby's behind.
That is a tough question. It is a toss up between my Gillette Big Fellow and my Gillette New open Comb. I really like the Open Comb design, and can get a close shave from either razor.
The best shaves I ever had were from a Schick injector e type. Those things shave amazingly well, better than any Gillette I've used.
second best safety razor is my gem micromatic clog proof with Ted pella blades.
It's a toss-up between my '49-50 Aristocrat or '64 Super Speed. They shave about the same but I like that gold Aristocrat to hold and look at. But 90% of the time I shave with my EJ 89 Lined.
My L3 1966 Gillette Slim was my first DE razor and still my favorite. It hangs on the shelf on my shelf of shaving gear with a blade always ready for touchups or if I need a quick shave. Although it doesn't get the love it used to due to my love of straights, it's still the "one" for me.

Tyke121,
It's a tie between my English Ever-Ready 1912 and my GEM Micromatic Open Comb - both SE razors.
Have fun !
Best regards
Russ
My late 40's Aristocrat, I have not tried any I enjoy more. I am going to give the new U.S.A. made Weber a shot.
I only have two vintage razors, a 1950 Aristocrat and a 1964 Super Speed. I shaved with the Aristocrat today and it was my favorite. But the next time I shave with the Super Speed, that'll be my favorite. :D
Do you guys really feel that much difference in the razor itself, I have many, about 10 maybe a few more and they all seem to shave the same.
I do have a favorite but it's because of the feel, and I like it better than my Mekur. I find the blades make the difference, as if I don't like the blades even in my favorite, DE, I don't like to shave. The biggest surprise is that my Schick injector gives me better shaves than I ever thought it could.
1937 Sheraton open comb...still in mint cond
I use a Rolls Razor most of the time...
Gillette New Type 1930's
I've got an old Henckels Rapide, but I haven't any of the blades shave ready though... I can't get the technique right honing them, to be honest. I'd say those are probably my favorite though.
Pay attention, *they're talking about safety razors. This is a safety razor. If you have any more questions or wisdom to share, we'll talk later.
