Re-post. Merkur 45 Bakelite DE

I am wondering if anyone has had any experience with this safety razor? I am very curious about it!

I haven't used it, that why I didn't comment on your first post. I've heard it's a real nice razor, about medium agressiveness as far as Merkur's go. I thought I seen a video on YouTube, but I must be mistaken as I can't seem to find it.

I haven't used a modern version but I used to collect slant head DE razors and I've got more than a few made of bakelite. During the war years they used it quite a bit since metal was diverted to war production. They are very light in weight and they work well enough IME. One of those things where I shaved with one or two, once or twice, just to try it out, but I prefer a more substantial weight to a DE. YMMV. If it is made by Merkur I'm confident it would be 'right' as far as quality of the product goes. Keep your eyes peeled for one of the old bakelite slants by Fasan or one of the other mfgs and that would be even better IMO.

thanks for the replies boys. I dont know why, but for some reason i like the look of it, even though its a plastic and ive kinda been really happy about getting away from the cheap cartridge feel of gillette domination. But i have felt no draw to any DE before this one, maybe because its different than what ive seen before I guess? I ask for opinions about the razor because it IS plastic, and it IS $30 that i could have easily put towards another straight or DE if this one fails

Well I'll tell ya, just IMHO, if you don't like it you'd have a heck of a time getting your $ out of it if you were to resell it. You can probably pick up a vintage bakelite DE on the bay for a third of what that one costs.

I have one of these and it's a nice looking little razor. The only thing about it is that it feels really light in the hand. If you get one, don't be tempted to put any extra pressure on it when using it.

I have one of those and like it. I think they're cool looking too and great for travel. I've only used the thing once though and was tempted and used pressure lol It is indeed really light. I should use it more often for fun and to get the hang of it. I'm just so in love with my Merkur 38C and str8s though but one of these days!
