I recently started using a Gillette Fatboy & I have to keep the adjustment at the #1 or #2 setting. Any more & I'm taking divots of flesh.
I'm curious, where do Fatboy users keep there adjustment setting at?
Thanks,
Darl (Tarkus)

My slim adjustable is not a fatboy, but pretty close. I keep it on 2.
It depends on the blade and, of course, everyone's face is different, but I generally use a 4-6 on my Fatboy when I use a yellow 7 o'clock or Astra (my preferred choices). If I use a feather blade, I use a two.
I use Derby blades in mine and keep it on 4.

I wouldn't of believed that the blade would make so much of a variable
Thanks everyone

I keep mine at 8 with most blades, 7 if it is a Feather.
Sounds to me like yours are either warped or your pressure is real high when using it
So far just 5 with Wilkinson.
Seems a bit mild though :)
Mike
I haven't used mine in a while but kept it at around 4-5.
In general, 6-7 for both the Fatboy and the Slim.
The Slim seems to give me a better shave in this range; I'm planning on opening the Fatboy up a bit more when it's up the next time through the rotation.
I keep both my Fatboy & Slim Adjustable on 9 and I use Feather blades.
Note: I pretty much use the same technique with my DE razors as I do when shaving with my straights. Just about zero pressure with guillotine/scything strokes everywhere on my face that I can use them.
Tarkus, I keep mine at 4, sometimes at 5. I have two Fatboy and two Aristocrat razors, which I keep for my grandsons. For the most part, though, I prefer the modern razors to the Gillettes. That's why I rarely use the Fatboy. It's a fine razor, though.
Stay well.
Gentle Moderators:
Kindly delete one of my posts above. How I ended up with two I'll never know. Thanks.

Mine is normally slammed at 9 but anywhere between 7 and 9 normally gives really good shaves.
An important tip I would offer is to really mind how much pressure you're putting on the razor. The Fatboy is a really hefty razor and you can literally let the weight of the razor do all of the work. Grip the razor as far down the handle as possible. This will keep you from unconsciously bearing down on the head of the razor.
I set mine on 5 no matter which blade I use. As indicated above by 1OldGI, let the weightr of the razor do the work. The Fatboy is not only heavy, it is top heavy towards the blade. Let the weight do the work and you'll see a big difference.
This is why this forum is so important. Thanks to you all. This thread is an important wake up call for myself. When I use a straight which is about 98% of my shaving I never ever cut myself. Its when I switch to a DE is when I do the bleeding. As per most of these posts its pretty obvious to me now that I'm applying way to much pressure with a DE. Its funny you see the words safety razor and you think the rule dont apply with it. "Safety" How could you possibly get cut with it its a Safe.
Thanks everyone for waking me up and pretty much letting me know, stop using a DE like I'm removing paint from a barn door. A light touch is needed.
Thanks again,

I used to keep it around 4 but was unhappy with the results, these days I'm liking it at a 7 with a Feather.
Darl! You need a bluetip! :) Seriously, (or not) no one talked much about different blades versus different settings?
Forgive me, I have never shaved with a DE. It just seems important. Let's say, Feather settings and Personna settings? What I am thinking is, if you put the most aggressive blade in an adjustable...and wind up turning it all the way down....Maybe a blade or razor change would benefit? Certainly experience would bring the clicks up?
Fat Boys need to know!
Sorry!
Tom
I don't have a Fatboy, but I have a couple of slim adjustables and one super adjustable and I keep them all around 6 or 7 I think... Love the vintage Gillette's! :)
I set mine to 9 on the first pass, than 5 the second and 3 the last and I use a feather blade
Good thread for me. I'm still shaving exclusively with straights but just won a fatboy on ebay so am glad to know where to begin: "1"
I usually do what I call the 5-4-3 technique: 5 for the first pass (WTG), 4 for the second pass (XTG) and 3 for the final (ATG). Works like a charm. You could also modify it, like 6-4-3 or 7-4-2. The sky's the limit :)
Well I just had a wonderful C.C.S. with a #3 setting only using the weight of the razor to do the work.
Hey!!!! This is alright!!!
Gonna continue to experiment and click up to 4 next time and so on.
Thanks to all who shown me the light

I wanted to give the latest progress report. I'm now getting very successful shaves with the setting set at 5 for W.T.G. and a 2 setting for a X.T.G. The key for me is the pressure or lack of pressure. I just let the weight of the razor do the work. Its been a fun learning experience with this Fatboy D.E. I'm really starting to like it alot. It will never replace a straight but its a fantastic alternative.

7 only regardless of the blade, but I get my best results using an Astra SP.
Another one late to this thread but here is my 2 bits worth any way. I set my Fatboy up by starting at 3 and then progressing up the scale till I got to the point where the shave was uncomfortable with cuts and then backed off one. I finally settled at 6 with Astra SPs.
I can imagine I would have to go through that routine again if I used another variety of blade to obtain an optimum setting and it could well be different than the 6 I now use. To me that is the biggest advantage of an adjustable DE, the ability to fine tune it for the blade you use, your technique and your type of skin.
Yes the Fatboy is heavy enough that you need virtually to apply no pressure. For me they work so well I have no desire to own any other DE.

When I shave with a safety razor, it usually is with a fatboy. I shave at the 9 setting with an astra blade.
Really late on the post,, but generally around the 5-7 range with Feathers ,, but it's been 6 months since I'm a straight shaver. With my straights ,, I set them on 1, it's their only setting.
I also shave on 9 but depending on blade, makes the shave either extremely enjoyable, or miserable. Seems like Astra green, polsilver, and polsilver super iridiums work best for me.
I keep my Fatboy dialed in at 3.
I keep my Fatboy on #5 with a Feather blade
