Thread: Ok, so my Merkur Futur came in today...

Hey everybody,

So my Merkur Futur (a Christmas present to myself) came in today after a weekend of waiting. You should note that I've never shaved with a DE razor before so I'm new to this. I opened it up and it came with 6 razors (5 feather Hi-Stainless and 1 Merkur). Should I wait to use the feathers and use the merkur or go ahead with the feathers and have my styptic pencil ready? lol. If it helps, I have moderately tolerant skin on the cheeks but a bit sensitive on the neck.

I use my Futur with feathers. Those Merkur blades are rough IMO.

Give it a go at 1.5 and move up from there.

My merkur future was my first DE still my favorite. Its heavy so a real light touch is needed. I use both merkur and feather blades. To be honest I wouldn't say I see a dramatic difference. I would say the feather does allow me to get and extra close shave but the merkur are not bad at all. If your neck is sensitive as mine is keep it set to #1 and really stick with the grain

Thanks guys, I'll try it out with the merkur first since it's already loose and i'll keep the setting nice and low.

I would recommend using the merkur blade first, since the feathers are sharper. A setting #3 on the face and a #2 on the neck (following the growth of the beard) will do the work. And last but not least, use NO pressure, because this razor is a bit heavy, and the razor itself will do the job. Once you had "finished" the sample merkur blade (6 shaves or so), you can move on to other blades. Good luck!

Start with the feathers,than you can compare them to all the lessor blades,the merkur blades cannot compare.JMO

Ok so, at 20 yrs. old, I had my first DE shave today, and it definitely is much different lol. I can feel less irritation where I did it right, but boy, one nick can do the trick. I did what I saw in most videos: one w/the grain, one across, and one against. I didn't think i saw much of a difference, but it was definitely there at the end. Practice, practice, practice!

p.s, I've been using the Col. Conk Almond soap that I got with it, and I like it, but I def. have to practice making lather too. I'm too used to the foamy canned stuff!

Congratulations fine sir! I had my first DE shave about a year ago when I was 17. The first month can be rough. But after that you will never go back. I've even turned some of my friends at school onto it.

I've started using straights and I would definitely suggest trying those out down the road. But for now enjoy the simplicity of DE shaving.

Congratulations on your first shave with the Futur! Nice razor and the adjustability gives you a lot of flexibility with sensitive spots and different blades. You might also want to buy a blade sampler pack at some point that'll let you experiment and find the blades that work best for your razor and skin.
