Unhappy About double edge razor blade....

Hi all, i have some questions about double edge razor blade. There are 4 elliptical holes on a double edge razor blade, i don't know exactly the effect of them. And would you please tell me where i can find a technical drawing of a double edge razor blade? Thanks all

    Hello and welcome to SRP.

To my knowledge the multiple holes/slots are there so the blade is compatible with any safety razor, and don't impede the performance in any way. As for technical specs, I'm not sure why you want them but rest assured any blade will fit any DE razor that you have.

to Ryan82 and gooser: Thanks for your information, i'm a mechanical engineering student, i have a major project that requires knowledge about technical requirement of the design of a double edge razor blade and why it's designed like that, little thing but big trouble.

Have you tried contacting various blade manufacturers for the info you desire? Acquiring data directly from a manufacturer would be beneficial to your project. Contact some manufacturers, like Proctor & Gamble (Gillette & Astra blades), DOVO (Merkur blades), or DORCO USA (Dorco blades).

To henryconchile: Thanks for your advise, i have tried to contact with those companies that you mentioned and more but they've just given some general answers because the detail information of this product is concern with private manufacture line, to avoid losing their design, they can't share these information for me.

A patent search will give you the original diagrams of the blade.

Welcome to SRP. If you haven't done it yet pick up a good DE, Merkur, vintage Gillette superspeed or something like that. Then buy a sampler pack of various mfgs DEs. If you are still shaving with cartridges you'll find a new and pleasant world of shaving in the DEs. You can then take the various mfg blades and compare them in real time, as far as size and design.

There are a very few vintage DEs from the early 1900s , like the Wade & Butcher for example, that won't take the normal DE blades, but as Ryan said, almost all current and most of the vintage will.

As I understand it, the original blades had 3 holes like you see, which fit the 3 piece razors of the time. Eventually, when Gillette made twist to open razors, they added the cutout in the middle to fit the new blade holding mechinism. Modern blades have both the cutout and the 3 holes, which is a good thing, since a lot of newly made razors use the 3 hole system.
