Default First encounter with an old Gillette open comb DE

Picked, cleaned up and shaved with an open comb DE for the first time today. Photos of it are in show and tell. I am here to tell you the it gives a wicked close shave with Astra SPs. Added bonus is that it does not clog up with lather while shaving like my Fat Boy likes to do. Like the thinner head compared to the TTO models too. It does require that you pay close attention to your technique. All in all a keeper. Next stop a Muhle R41.

My 1920's Gillette "old type" has earned its keep in my den. Just remember to check, and adjust if necessary, the blades you fit to it; modern blades seem to not fit as snug as they should.

    Dave

Thanks for the tip. I learned after posting that mine is a "New" Gillette OC long comb. I don't know if there is a huge difference in the way an "Old" and a "New" model shave. Used it again this morning for a very close shave.

This morning I enjoyed a DFS from my old type head sitting on a custom handle. It's a terrific head and has a permanent place in my rotation. A milder version of the head is any of the Merkur open comb razors (they all use the same head).

    Bob,

My experience with open comb DE's is limited to the R41, but I must say that I'm definitely digging the OC for the same reasons you listed above. In addition to the R41 if you haven't tried a slant bar yet I'd highly recommend one as well.
