Question and information on IBC Straight Shavette

G'day SRP,

I'm thinking about buying a IBC Straight Shavette has anybody here SRP has own a IBC Shavette and what do you think of them, I'm very concern about the big round thumb screw that might get in the way of shaving depending on the angle during the shave see image below. Does anybody have any issue about these problems the big round thumb tighten screw for the blade to attach together, and for those who have never heard of a IBC Straight Shavette see link Irving Barber Company, LLC

Trouble is their is no recent youtube clip on the IBC Shavette because the product is new, it seem not very many wet shavers on youtube hasn't used it yet and to be able to share their reviews and also is this new IBC shavette out performance better other shavette model on the market.

That should be okay, shavettes usually have a higher angle to your face than a straight would. At worst, it'll be just grazing your skin, but shouldn't cause any irritation or anything like that. My only concern is catching rouge hairs in the sideburns/any facial hair. Although my Dovo shavette has the same problem in the gap where the blade sits anyways. Just makes you more careful in those areas so you're not shaving and plucking hairs at the same time.

I use an IBC. No issues with the thumbscrew whatsoever. Love the blade holding mechanism.

There are much better than that one, plus I know. Wouldn't care for the screw on the surface like that. YMMV but for disposable I use Feather, the blades are the best and the quality is there. Tc

The IBC hasn't really arrived yet in the community it seems. In live in Germany and didn't want to order one from the US because I would have to pick it up from the customs office, which is a pain in the rear.

IBC has a few international partners linked to their site. The shop in England only sells to commercial barbers. I was able to order from a shop in Spain and will be getting it by the end of next week. There are no custom duties within the European Union.

I have one question: Has someone left the blade in the shavette without splitting it open after use, say for maybe 3 or 4 shaves? I'm concerned about rust. I use a Sedef at the moment and have no rust issues since it is made of stainless folded sheet metal. I leave the blade in it for 3 days. In a Dovo I had problems with rust, even in the plastic holder.

If necessary, I would take the blade out, clean and dry the whole thing after every use, like with my DE Razors. But if I don't really have to, why bother? Rust would destroy the plating of the razor and eventually destroy it.

Any help?

Sorry no helpful feedback from me on that one. I take my IBC apart every day just like I did with my Merkur DE.

The IBC blade holding mechanism is ***way*** friendlier and safer than the Sedef. Would be worth getting on those grounds alone.

I got the IBC Shavette on thursday as the spanish retailer predicted....not bad for the distance. I took one of the Feather Professional blades and inserted it as shown in the video from IBC.

It disappointed me that the bladeholder doesn't close as well as it does with half a DE, which I tried afterwards. The little knobs (hard to describe in english - see the pic above) that are supposed to sink in the holes on the opposite side of the holder are too short IMO. With a DE they sink in and hold in place OK, but with the long and thicker feather, the holder can snap open with little force applied to the pivoting side of the holder - ie with the thumb.
Furthermore the blade seems to rest on the inside of the handle when the shavette is closed. Probably on the corner of the heel of the blade. The handle is made of cheap looking cast plastic, which I wasn't sure of until I got it. I thought it to be of aluminum. For right now I would say that the valency of the IBC can't reach the similar priced Feather Artist Club SS Shavette. Considering that you can boil the Feather it must be indistructable. I wouldn't dare to try that with the IBC, eventhough IBC talks of putting the shavette in Barbicide.

I'm yet to try to shave with it. Maybe the blade holder with a Feather is not a problem afterall. Sending it all the way back to Spain isn't really an option. I won't give up hopes too soon to have bought a very nicely styled and usable shavette.

Update: I've got the first few shaves down with the Feather Pros and half a DE. The Feather works well and gives a close to a Straight feel. The DE gives equal results, but you can feel the elasticity of the thinner blade,which in my opinion makes it less prone for nicking. The Shavette mows through the beard nicely with both blades and is good to handle. It is easy to clean. To be safe from rust I quickly unscrew it, rinse it, dry it and put it back together after every use. With each blade change I take it completly apart. This just takes a minute.

I'll use up the Feathers and then stick with the DEs. They seem to fit the IBC better.

The handle is probably made of nickel and not plastic, as I assumed earlier.

How do you compare your IBC with the feather SS after a couple of months of use?

Are you still having problems with the big feather blades in the IBC or do you just use half DE blades in it?

I hope Irving Barber comes with a new version which solves the problem of touching the scales with a feather pro blade.

Hi and sorry I'm late replying, but I haven't been here lately.

I can't compare with the SS because I don't have one. There seems to be a misunderstanding. With alittle care you can place the long Feathers in the IBC and use them reliably. The DE fits better though.
The thicker Feathers mow through the beard just alittle bit better than the DE, but I still like the DE more. I guess you can go both ways, which was one of the design intentions of the IBC.

Are you from the Netherlands? You can order the IBC from Germany now. I had to get mine from Spain in June.
