Thanked: 3Just Ordered my First SR!!
Gents —
I just ordered my first SR from Whipped Dog (aka Larry) and I’m so excited. He has had excellent customer service and was so helpful as I made the decision to proceed forward with SR shaving.
If anyone on here is considering moving to a SR I would totally recommend Larry over at Whipped Dog.
I’ve continued to lurk on this site and I’m sure here in a week once my SR is in my hand. Now I hope I just don’t slit my throat
Cheers

You won't slit your throat and you will enjoy. While you wait, practice stropping with a butter knife or some other dull implement and work on your lathering technique.

Thanked: 3Thanks Harold — I've been lathering with a brush and soap now for the past 6 mo or so and am confident in my technique there. As for stropping, I've been practicing with my pocket knives and an old leather belt. I have noticed a significant difference on my knives since I have been stropping them after I run them across my stones.

Sounds like you are off to a great start. Make sure and browse the Straight Razor Place Library - Straight Razor Place Library and ask any questions that come up.

Just don't get discouraged if you have problems early - keep reading and talking to people. Took me about 6 months of pestering people on this site to get to where I was comfortable.

Thanked: 4830I hope it comes in soon and you find it to be pleasurable and relaxing. Like many skills it does take a little bit of practice to be good at it. Go slow and enjoy!

Thanked: 270My first straight came from Larry as well and he sends helpful suggestions with each new razor. If you approach it with an attitude of enjoyment and something you really want to do you can't fail. It's hard to believe that I have been straight shaving for almost five years and I'm still excited about it.

Thanked: 2Congrats on your purchase!!! I leaned about Whipped Dog (Larry) about two weeks ago, which I would have know about him sooner. Keep us posted, I may get a razor from him.

Congrats on your first SR!
As a fellow Newbie, I would like to offer a few thoughts on what helped me in the beginning of my straight razor journey. First of all, I would like to tell you, as a few others already have, to take your time and to use a gentile hand while shaving. But most importantly, I want you to know how important it is to read up on this site before you start. I have been able to completely avoid nicks and cuts in all of my shaves so far, and I attribute this almost solely to the excessive amount of research that I put in before I began; although, I'm sure quite a bit of luck was also involved. Anyway, I hope this helps out a bit, and welcome to the ranks!
