Barber Shave Part Deux

Went back to my favorite Cuban barber for yet another great shave and haircut. As usual the set up (Hot towels, massage, alcohol cool down, etc.) is a truly decadent and luxurious experience, something I always look forward to.

Truth be told, although the result is always a nice close shave, it just isn't as close as I can accomplish. The barber uses one of my razors (6/8 T-I Bison yesterday) which I have honed to a quite keen edge. He really does not go full on ATG and that is possibly why the finished product is not quite as close as when I am wielding the blade. Problem?? Not hardly. Just means I find myself shaving about 8 hours earlier, no worries.

..and what can you say about a barber who is so good that he uses a straight to trim your eyebrows. Anxiously awaiting my next visit.

I don't want to dis your barber however back in the day if you went to a barber for a shave and you could do a better job that guy wouldn't be a barber very long. When you went to a barber it was exactly because you got a perfect shave, better than you could do.

I would chalk it up to a lack of familiarity with the blade, and therefore a desire not to make a mistake on a paying Customer.

Is there some reason not use one of his edges? Even if it is a shavette?

I would want that perfect shave, too.

Looks like a great time, I haven't found anything like that around my area. Most of the places near me wont go near a customer with a razor at all

Never been shaved by a barber, but I've heard more than one barber (last one I recall was japanese) stating that the biggest mistake they saw people make was trying to be too close with a shave.

I only do partial ATG, with some parts of my face, it leads to discomfort and razor burn no matter what. I'd imagine the majority of people have less sensitive skin than I do, but a barber may not know who does and who doesn't.

I end up with a shave where I can't feel hair except in spots if I pull my hand against the grain I can feel just a little bit. If a barber did that, I'd be happy. Any shorter than that ATG and I'm nursing all kinds of stuff for the next two days.

My dad was a barber, and told me that he only shaved in the direction of hair growth so as not to cause irritation and ingrown hairs. He would only shave against the grain if a customer specifically requested a "shave under."
