It's better to just be careful, but if you must mute, rubbing the spike against some glass works well. No metal will be removed, but it will dull the spike. A rehone in the future should bring it back to the original condition. Hopefully.

I have an Aust with a square point that bites me on the curve of my neck. My barber said to run the tip over a glass jar 3 or 4 times. That will dull it but not ruin the edge. I tried it with a old razor and it works well. I then honed it and got the edge back.
