Thread: [Query] Best way to blunt a point?

I've got a lovely Joseph Elliot silver steel extra hollow grind (first time today shaving with an extra hollow) which I just set and honed. It's got a rather nastily sharp and pokey point though. What is the best way to blunt the tip? Just rub it against a hone or?

If I do mute a point I do it on the edge of a hone, not the wider honing surface, and very gently. As Euclid pointed out (no pun) you may want that point back someday so less is more.

I muted my first and wish I didn't later. You learn to respect it, which in the end, helps you respect ALL razors. I use only square points now for the most part. Makes a nice line down the side burns :<0)

Thanks (I was searching for "blunt" and not getting hits; "mute" or "round" is what I wanted it seems). I have other razors with non-round points, but for some reason this Joseph Elliot's geometry is such that the point is very pokey.

I much prefer an unmuted tip, but I have one or two that were muted before they came to me. They were way overdone, and would take more than I am willing to do in order to restore that point. I would take the advice given, and be gentle.

I have muted several tips, especially if they bit me! Just go slowly, remember that you can't add metal back once you take it off For most of my spikes it just took a couple of quick drags across a 1k hone to tone it down enough to avoid nicks.

Thanks for the advice all. Perhaps this point got particularly pointy due to the fairly long setting process, necessitated by the initially rather ragged edge.

Please understand that you do not need to change the profile of the point. You merely need to dull it, and that takes just a light dragging of the point on the side of the hone.

To beat the idea to death, a spike point does not need to be rounded over to make it safe. If that point is dulled, then it loses its bite without losing its appearance.

I've found that different razors require slight adjustments when shaving. Perhaps you have not used the razor enough times to adapt to its.....ah, razorness....weight, grind, width, etc. Personally, I've found that cuts and nicks are learning multipliers.
Personally I would take a pokey point as a challenge to shave without blood.

To bring a point back you have to remove material from the whole toe end, the whole edge or round the tip, which can look funky.

So the least you round or mute, the better, it does not take much to mute the tip, a single light stroke, on a high grit stone will do it
